What a rising plate meter actually measures
A rising plate meter measures compressed sward height: the plate rests on the pasture and the counter records height in half-centimetre clicks. You take dozens of drops per paddock, average them, and convert height to cover with a formula — usually a seasonal equation that assumes a sward density.
That last step is the weak point. The conversion from height to kilograms of dry matter assumes density, and density changes with season, species and grazing history. Two swards at the same height can carry very different amounts of feed.
What a photo measures instead
